Type of a scam Online Purchase
I went to file my taxes online at hrblock.com - I was not using any other software. I began to file my federal portion, and was told I needed to upgrade to their Deluxe product because my income was over $99,999 and therefore I needed to file a 1040. Their free option only includes a 1040A and 1040EZ. I've included a screenshot showing what I'm referring to.
This was confusing, because on the homepage of hrblock.com it says (in bold) that filing a 1040 is free. I called the customer support line, and it took me about 45 minutes to get this resolved. I spoke with 3 representatives, and only the final one who was a supervisor gave me a key code so that I could file the federal portion for free.
It's worth noting on a personal level that after all this trouble of taking the time to speak with them, they told me that I would still need to pay roughly $30 to file the state returns - I thought that as a measure of customer satisfaction, they would be happy to waive the small fee for that.
My main complaint is with the part of the situation regarding the federal return. I believe it is bait and switch advertising because on the homepage, in bold, it says filing a 1040 is free. However, when going through the return later on, the website will not allow you to proceed without upgrading to Deluxe. I had to call, speak with 3 representatives including a supervisor, and spend 45 minutes of my time to clear this up. If I hadn't had enough time, I simply would have hung up after a short time and gone with a competing company, rather than attempt to resolve the complaint. I imagine that many other people are misled into upgrading to the Deluxe product when it is unnecessary.
