A restricted call came into my cell phone and it sounded exactly as my son's voice; he was utterly upset and distraught. My wife and I listened to the call and believed it was our son. He reported that he was in a bad accident and broke his nose. Was arrested and sent to the hospital for treatment and then put in jail. He said a public defender lawyer is to going to call us to fill in the detail. He told us not to tell anybody. He mentioned that John Steinberg will be calling after this one allowed call. Shortly thereafter John Steinberg called informing us that our son was involved in a two car accidents. He broke his nose and was arrested with DUI and the driver of the other car was a pregnant woman who was badly hurt and was sent to the hospital for treatment. The severity of the woman injury and to her unborn baby was unknown. John Steinberg believed that my son was not at fault because of the existence of video camera recording the accident. However our son pleaded to be bailed out of the jail. So John informed us that there is a First Time Offender program institute to help first offender. And that this program would help our son getting out of trouble with any criminal record and be release right the way if we can secure a $32500 cash for his release. The Court that has this program is in Truckee (3 1/2 hours drive from our home.) The second option is the Aide Program support by the District Attorney and Public Defender would provide a secure driver with a FDIC number to come and pickup the cash and provided a court approved received to release our son, and there after the money would be refunded back to us in two days. Third option he is working on is to find a closer court location that support this First Timer Offender. This was around 12 noon California time today )6/05/2023. He told us to go to the bank to secure this fund and once we have the fund to call him back. We did secure the fund (at the great concern and caution of our bank officer). Upon returning home, we called John Steinberg (510-747-8396) to check in. He informed us as of the time 1:30 pm. His office could not locate a closer Court that support this "FTI" program. And that the only two options left was to call for the driver to pick up the cash and secure our son release right away or to go the bail bond man and post bond which would mean our son would be in jail for a day or two longer. My wife and I asked John if he is from a Public Defender Office. He acknowledged that he was. I asked if we can do a video call so I can see his face. He said he cannot do that because he was in court and they do not allow video calls. We got a little more suspicious so I asked my wife to check with the Santa Clara Public Defender Office. They never heard of his name and that their phone prefix is 408 not 510 and that their office do not work with securing money from offender's family. So we seriously did not believe this person and discontinue our conversation with him. We text our son to call us back. John's call to us lasted over 25 minutes. We decided not to follow his plan and decide to go the Santa Clara Jail to see our son in person and to seek legal assistance with my wife former employer, the one she retired from (the Contra Costa County). As we were driving down to San Jose our son called, and we ascertain that he was not in jail. And that we were almost a victim of this elaborate scam. The imitated voice of our son was not discernable to both of us. I hope this report provides helpful info to help catch these scammers.
