I received a letter stating that information had been added to my credit report, including a partial SSN not belonging to me. When I spoke to a representative, they would not tell me anything about this added information, supposedly because I have a credit freeze in place. They would not explain why I received this letter nor what actions would cause someone else’s SSN to be added. They claimed that the “creditor” was not showing up on my report now but refused to explain how or why that could happen. They offerred to send me a copy of my report, which I declined. I have had a credit freeze for the past 7 years, have not applied for any credit in that time, and have no debt. I found it very suspicious that the person on the phone could not explain anything about the situation or the reason for the letter. It’s possible it was a legitimate reporting of someone fraudulently applying for credit in my name, but the lack of clarity in the letter, combined with the total lack of transparency on the phone made me highly suspicious. I don’t know what their true objective is, but I would not respond to a letter like this.
