I have just started to live on my own. Person knocked on my door and said they were there about the gas/electric. I was very much taken off guard so didn't think to protest too much despite now looking back on it and seeing several red flags. I live in an apartment, we only use electric. I genuinely thought he was from my own electric supplier, and when I asked if he was he replied in a way that implied he was. He took down all of my account information, and I only started to get suspicious (outside of my blind panic when I had trouble logging in, being in my pjs in front of this random dude, having him in my apartment, thinking there was something wrong with my electric bill) when I saw his tablet was displaying Inspire Clean Energy instead of my service provider. I didn't get to read anything, look at anything he was filling out until he had me sign something I was too anxious to ask about and then stayed with me as I answered an automatic phone call that he was blatantly supposed to leave for after telling me to just say 'hello' to all the questions and encouraging me to just say yes. One of the questions even asked if the 'marketing representative' had left and he encourage me to say yes. We finally got to the end where it asked me if I wanted to SWITCH my electricity provider despite him never saying anything about it, listing the prove that was 3 dollars more and I finally said no, where he immediately said "yes, yes!" in the hopes the call would hear him. Then he just said, "I guess you don't want it" and left. I feel really stupid and annoyed that I missed those red flags - I was very thrown off as I initially assumed he was maintenance, which put me in the frame of mind for someone here to help rather than someone sketchy. I called my actual service provider as this person had all of my account information with them and could theoretically get my services switched when I didn't want them to.
