Insurance Payment Scam Reports & Reviews (1)

- Peachtree City, GA, USA • Nov 08, 2024

I received a phone call while I was waiting in car service lobby yesterday (Nov 7) at 10:24am. The caller ID said Blackstone Medical, which was in fact the company that provided the mailed equipment for a sleep study I had in August. This man, ****** *****, introduced himself briefly, questioned whether I had the sleep study done on August 23rd, with my doctor's name (both correct), asked if I had the results, then told me I still owed them money and he needed a credit card payment now.

This sounded suspicious to me, as I had paid the co-pay ($45), prior to receiving the device in the mail. I told him I was not in a place where I could pay and to send me an invoice. He stayed on the line with me to confirm the email with invoice was delivered. I told him I would look into it and get back. He then emailed me a second time with a secure website to make a card payment.

This seemed odd to me, but I'd just moved and changed jobs/health insurance providers so assumed there was a mix-up in coverage. I called Blue Cross as soon as I arrived home yesterday afternoon and they send me a copy of my EOB which showed they were billed $225 by Blackstone, covered $180, and I paid my $45 co-pay. At 5:22pm yesterday, Nov 7th, ****** called me again asking if I was ready to make my payment. I felt very harassed and told him I was still investigating. He went on and on, and I hung up on him. He immediately texted me explaining that I needed to pay right away because tomorrow (Nov 8th) at 6pm, my account would be turned over to someone else.

The more I dug into it today, I realized the invoice ****** sent me showed a charge of $329, insurance paying $180, my initial payment of $45, and now I supposedly owed $104. ****** identified himself as in collections, but the invoice was dated Nov 7th. I also spent a long time talking to both my previous and current insurance, neither of whom said they had received any additional communication from Blackstone about a different charge other than the $225. They assured me this claim was settled.

Unfortunately the finance person in my doctor's office was out today so I couldn't re-confirm with them but the more I thought about it, the more this seemed like a scam. Searching BBB, I see that Blackstone is not accredited & have a 1 star rating on Google, etc, with many people reporting similar incidents as me. I will follow up with my doctor, as there may be some legitimacy around this, but overall it feels very wrong. Either ****** stole my medical record from Blackstone, or if he is truly and employee of the company, they are not doing business in good faith.
