• On Friday 5/14/21 the puppies were sent to a shipping company in Atlanta, Georgia by the name of Intercontinental Carriers. The puppies were supposed to be shipped out at 3 pm eastern time and received in Colorado at 7 pm. However, at 1:30 pm I received a call from someone that states they work at Intercontinental Carriers stating that they could not send out the puppies until they had specialized electronic crates for the puppies. That would cost $2000 a piece. I was able to come up with the $2000 for the one dog, but I was not able to come up with the second $2000 until Monday 5/17/21.
• On Monday 5/17/21 I received a message that the flights for the dogs had been rescheduled to leave at 12 pm. However, they needed another $1000 for the care and feeding of the dogs before they would send the dogs out. My dogs were still not sent out on Monday 5/17/21.
• On Tuesday 5/18/21 they still had not sent out my dogs. They wanted another $1000 for the shipping process to get my dogs out to Colorado.
• On Wednesday 5/19/21 my dogs were supposed to be shipped out at 3 pm eastern time. They did not ship out my dogs because they wanted another $500.00 for a new flight for the dogs because the original flight had expired. I was only able to pay $440 because that was literally all I had left, and the breeder picked up the other $60 for the flight which I paid on Thursday 5/20/21. I was told on Thursday 5/20/21 at 6:10 pm mountain time that my dogs would go out first thing on Friday 5/21/21.
• On Friday I started attempting to contact the person from intercontinental carriers at 7:41 in the morning to find out about my dogs when they were going to be shipped, I didn’t receive an email until 12 pm that I needed to pay another $1500 dollars for vaccinations for the dogs. I was told at 4:43 pm mountain time that both of my dogs were in transit, which I assumed was coming to Colorado. At 8:41 pm mountain time I asked what the status of my dogs was and did not receive a response until Saturday 5:07 am saying they would let me know first thing in the morning.
• Saturday 5/22/21 I was asked if they could deliver my dogs to me at my house but because I work until 7 pm I could not get my dogs until after that. I asked specifically if my dogs were in Colorado or still in Atlanta and they said that my dogs were not in Atlanta and they had 1 final flight to get to Colorado. I wanted to have a friend who lives in Atlanta pick up my dogs and I would fly down there and get my dogs myself. Throughout the day on Saturday I was told my dogs would be in Colorado shortly.
• On Sunday 5/23/21 the dogs were still not in my custody. I attempted to get a hold of the person again and was being told that he would get back to me in 30 minutes. I threatened to file a police report and he finally called me stating that I needed to pay another $1500 for the vaccine for the other dog. I was still under the belief that my dogs were somewhere in Colorado. I had to get the $1500 from someone to pay them and they got paid Sunday night.
• Monday 5/24/21 I asked when I am getting my dogs. I was told that I needed to pay $1000 per dog for the care and feeding of the dogs before I would get my dogs. I still did not receive custody of my dogs.
• On Tuesday 5/25/21 I received an email from the animal quarantine center in Miami, Florida stating that they needed $3000 for the release of my dogs. I was shocked to find out that my dogs were in fact not in Colorado but they had been in Atlanta this whole time and had been flown out on Tuesday 5/25/21 to Miami, Florida. I came up with $3000 and paid it to them, but then later was told that I needed another $3000 to get my second dog out of quarantine. I was not able to pay the second $3000 until Wednesday 5/26/21.
• 5/26/21 Was told that the $3000 is just for 1 dog and had to pay a 2nd $3000 for the second dog. The additional $3000 was paid, waiting for information when my dog was sent out.
• On 5/27/21 received a message from "the animal quarantine" department in Miami, Florida stating that both my puppies have contracted parvovirus and it would be $5000 to treat both dogs. (Throughout this whole process when I could no longer afford to pay this money, I got accused of puppy abandonment). I have also been told that this money is “refundable,” but the only way to get my money is that I will get it upon delivery of the dogs……
My concern is threefold. My first concern is that any shipping agency that the dog breeder is utilizing, the dog breeder should know what the costs of the shipping are, anything that may hold up the shipping of the animals. This should be given to the buyer on payment of the animal. If I would have known that I needed $4000 for the crates, $3000 for the vaccinations, then I would have either had the money readily available or I would have arranged a way to get the animals in Atlanta, especially since I have friends that live in Atlanta.
My second concern is that my dogs have not been in anyone's custody for 13 days now. I have no idea how my dogs are doing, if they are being well taken care of. I had to threaten to get pictures of my dogs and the first time I threatened them they only sent pictures of one of my dogs and not my other dog. That picture was on Tuesday, May 18th. The next set of pictures that I got was Monday 5/25/21 where both dogs were pictured but I had to threaten not to send the money and file a police report. I feel that not only is this shipping company taking advantage of situations, but the breeder should know exactly what their process is, so that the dogs are not left without care for 10+ days. The breeders should be responsible for knowing what the cost of everything is, so they can give that to the buyers.
My third concern is that there is no transparency of what the costs are with intercontinental carriers. The costs always come at a surprise and the puppies will not be shipped until you pay that fee. There is no written contract between the customer and the shipper. As a consumer, I feel like I am being held in a difficult position because, 1) I am already attached to these dogs, 2) I am being told that if I don't take them, then I will get turned into the authorities for puppy abandonment. 3) All payments are being made through Zelle, Moneygram, or Applepay. That feels like something is not legitimate. When I asked why the payments were to be made in these forms, I was not given a reason why. I feel like I have no options other than try to find the money. In my dealings with the employee from International Carriers he asked for me to send him a picture of what was in my checking account. All of this feels very suspect.
