She googled “Xfinity Customer Support” and there is a company called Internetncabletv.com that pays for advertising space so that their phone number pops up when that is searched. I viewed my mothers safari page with the search and phone number still up (photo attached).
When answering the phone, they do not state who they are and operate as though they are Xfinity Customer Service. My mother was told that if she paid the Xfinity bill, the cable and internet won’t be back up and running for 4 days (this is a lie), but if she signs up for a promotion at no additional cost, they will have it back running tomorrow.
My mother hands me the phone and tells me to “speak with Xfinity” in which I’m told the same thing. I’m explicitly told that this promotion is the only way to get the internet back tomorrow, there will be no additional charges, and they can cancel at any time with no charges and go back to their old service if they prefer.
I hand the phone back to my mother and left her house, and she proceeds to provide the information needed to sign up for the promotion. At the very end of the call it is stated that the cable box will come from DirecTV and the internet from T Mobile - she then asks why not from Xfinity, and they further deceive her by explaining they are “affiliated with Xfinity”.
I come back and hour later and find out what had happened and see in her emails she is signed up for an entirely new cable and internet service from DirecTV and TMobile. I call the company back and explain the confusion and how she was mislead and that we need to cancel the account and services she signed up for. The representative spends 15 minutes trying to sell me on why we should keep it, and refuses to cancel the account, although we are allowed to, and hangs up on me.
I call again and am put on with the supervisor, who spends a full 40+ minutes trying to sell me on the service, trying to sell us on the idea of waiting until the boxes arrive to cancel the services, and when all else fails, tells me he can’t cancel the account (after they had explicitly told us to call them directly to cancel the account) and hangs up on me. They then block my number, and I am texted a phone number for the “cancellation department” (8002882020) which a quick google search shows to be a fraudulent number.
I then call DirecTV and they promptly cancel the account for me.
Now several days later, they boxes arrive, and the InternetnCabletv.com company is continually calling my mother telling her she “needs” to activate the internet box to be able to return it (a clear lie).
It is abundantly clear these sales reps don’t get paid until the hardware is delivered, and the services are activated.
To summarize, there is a legitimate company (internetncabletv.com) that is genuinely affiliated with Xfinity, TMobile and DirecTV that are using deceptive and fraudulent tactics to take advantage of folks like my senior mother who are not tech savvy.
-They intentionally pay for advertising space to have their number appear in the place of the legitimate Xfinity customer support
-They intentionally do not clarify they are not actually that company, and further deceive by stating they are “affiliated”
-They explicitly lie to make a sale and sign callers for new service and state that it can be cancelled at any point in time with zero repercussions - the DirecTV contract that was emailed to my mother stated that this was a 24 month contract and any cancellation after the activation would result in $20/month fee for all remaining months on the contract, plus other fees. They lied that the only way for her internet service to be returned was by signing up for their promotion.
-They deny you to exercise your right to cancel your service, in order to ensure their sale is completed
-These are fraudulent scammers that are being hired to do dirty work by companies like Xfinity, DirecTV and TMobile.
While I’m unsure of the legal boundaries here, there is clear deception, lying and fraudulent tactics taking place and specifically taking advantage of vulnerable people like senior citizens
Based on this, I am seriously concerned about these people having been the ones to take down all of my mothers personal information, including credit card and social security, and what they may do with that information.
