We have been through at least four different scam attempts. The first was very professional. The caller left a message for the owner of our business. I returned the call and was directed to a person who told me I had 45 minutes to pay my electric bill in the amount of $2500, that they would not accept any credit cards or online payment. As $2500 is a typical monthly bill and i wasn't sure of the due date, I panicked. I was directed to buy a particular prepaid debit card at Kroger, then call her back with the account numbers of the card. I quickly gathered all the cash in the safe and rushed to Krogers. Luckily, a clerk at the store saw me pawing through the display of cards trying to find the specific one I needed. She explained it was a scam and urged me to call IPL. I did and was assured they would never call in that manner.

The second attempt a month or so later was the same as the first but a little less smooth. The third and fourth were obvious copy cats. The fourth came in from a Tacoma, Washington area code!

When i stopped to think about it, it was obviously a scam. However, when someone is threatening a scenario that would result in lost revenue, damaged equipment, and a diminished respect from ther customers, the adrenaline level hits max and another hard-working small business is hit where it hurts, their ;personal pocketbooks.
