I just opened a small business and have been buried in paperwork. I did not read the fine print for the online website I thought was the IRS portal for EIN number issuance. I entered my personal SSN, address, business name and clicked submit right about when I realized it was not actual the IRS. Really wish there was a back button in life sometimes. Had I read more carefully I would have seen it was not the IRS but rather a third party filer. I feel quite stupid. Why is this legal? Luckily I did not submit payment because I know EINs are free. However, I did immediately file with the actual IRS (so they could not use my business name), created a IPPIN for future tax filings (to prevent further tax fraud) and froze my credit with all three bureaus. I also sent an email to the contact email at https://irs-taxnumber.org/ to withdraw my consent to use my personal info. Not sure what that will do, but at least its on record.
