Odd twist on the traditional gift card scam. Late night call from supposedly IT support following up on an update to remove 2 seemingly random gift cards from system. Have had 2 separate phone calls with 2nd one adding a $50 VISA gift card but settled for a $25 when store did not have the higher dollar amount. Starts out asking if you know about the update and asking you to verify that all the Home Depot and Best Buy gift cards have been pulled from the sales floor. Once you find them, you are asked to provide a count, keep one of each card, and deface remaining cards with black marker and writing a code on the front of the one you kept out, defaced/destroyed cards are to be bagged and placed in manager's office for verification. Then asks for the code under grey strip of the one you kept out, for verification purposes. This is the step I can't get past to understand how they are trying to trick you into adding monies to the gift card. Constantly answered any push back with you are not allowed to do any TRANSACTIONS, but you can open, deface, scratch off grey strip, etc. But don't worry you are not doing a transaction. I just need to verify for tax purposes that they were removed properly. Call ends at this point as I refused to open gift card and had no way to provide a fake code. I also did not deface any of the others. Scammers seem very aware that retail cashiers are trained that they can not process any transaction without a customer present and giving them cash for a gift card purchase. They constantly assure throughout the call that you are Removing them from the system or Deactivating them, not processing a transaction. Also talk very fast, throwing out random codes, item numbers, etc to sound more convincing. The marking of the barcode effectively destroying remaining inventory was a unique twist and could catch unsuspecting associate, getting them doing things before the transaction part comes up. Good things to remember, especially late at night. IT support doesn't call you. Normally, YOU call them and then may have to wait for them to call . There is nothing so urgent that it can't wait until manager arrives the following day to complete task if really necessary. Scammer kept harping on some kind of tax issue requiring them to get cards out of system immediately. In my store's case, the action, Removing item from system, is not a function that can be done at store level. I.T. goes through corporate level support to update the system the following morning. Never scratch off grey strip, open a gift card, or provide code under grey strip for anyone other than a present cash paying customer who asks for assistance understanding how to use their purchase. And 9.9/10 times someone calls you after management has normally left the store (5pm to 6am), it's probably a scammer and if legit they have ways to contact District or Store management to verify their identities and the necessity of any actions outside of normal operating procedures.

my husband believed company was it support for Microsoft. We gave them access to our computer. Paid for life time support 849.00 and when an issue arrived was unable to get assistance, reached out to Microsoft and they explained that they never call. they got bank info and hacked husbands account for up to 20,000 dollars and tried to have us pay to have spyware removed for another 849.00 dollars which was the flag to us that it was a scam. we actually purchased new computers and had to repair network the cable carrier. Microsoft has copy of fake document and may have IP address but folder was empty document gone.
