Type of a scam Employment
I have been applying for jobs on Indeed, LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter. I received an email on July 11, 2023 which said “Dear Applicant, We are happy to receive your application for our Data Entry Specialist Job Opening, Please send a copy of your updated resume to [email protected] for further review.”. Believing it to be a genuine job offer, I emailed my resume to the email id given to me. They responded on July 13, 2023, by thanking me for applying, they stated that this position would be 100% remote, then they listed the benefits of the position, and offered a Monday-Friday 9am-5pm with lunch at 12 noon, 40 hour week schedule with a weekly pay of $1,400, also listed within the email was a list of the job duties and 10 interview questions: “1. Tell me about yourself and describe your relationship with your current or most recent manager. 2. When can you start if hired? 3. How do you manage needing to multitask? 4. How fast and accurate are your keyboarding or typing skills? 5. What is your greatest strength, and how will it help your performance in this position. 6. What data entry software or programs are you familiar with? 7. Tell Us why you feel you are the right person for this Job? How do you see yourself fitting in for this position? 8. Which financial institution do you bank with, so we can determine the payroll portal to put you on? 9. We like to think of ourselves as a team working towards the same goals. How do you feel about working in a team environment? 10. Do you have a computer / printer at home ?” Still believing this to be a legitimate offer, I answered every question truthfully including the one asking about my Financial Institution. Then on July 17, 2023 I received a response stating that they were offering me the job and I would be placed on a paid 2 week probation “You would be placed on a paid 2-week probation in order for the management to access your work ethics, efficiency and salary increment consideration. You will be fully paid for the 2 weeks probation. You will be enrolled for top-of-the-line training that includes online training, and new hire class orientation. Testing your efficiency for the new week is to be in charge of the purchase and delivery of the company's branded materials and equipment for your orientation and workstation. A payment in the form of a Certified Company Check would be issued to you by the company's financial manager to take care of the expenses.” In that same email they asked me to “fill the following information below to enlist into the Company's Register for proper documentation, it is also required by the HR Department. Full Name, Address, Apt/Suite #, City, State, Zip Code, Cell number (For SMS)” they also stated that my “paperwork (USCIS Form I-9 and W-4 forms) will be sent to you via FedEx after the probation period.” Again I replied and filled out the information, still thinking it was a legitimate opportunity. Then I received a response asking to “Please advise how close you're to Office Max or Office Depot?” I replied by giving the distance of the nearest Office Depot and its address. Later on July 18, 2023 I received another response where they asked “Can you get to Office Depot and purchase a Standard Check Refill (Business)? It's needed in order to print and deposit the certified pdf check which will be issued to you for your workstation and equipment. It cost about $26, send me a copy of the purchase receipt for records and reimbursement.” At this point, I was suspicious and sent them a Seeking Assurance Regarding Company Authenticity email and never got any response back which confirmed that this was a scam this whole time. I also googled Standard Check Refill (Business)? It's required to print and deposit the certified PDF check which lead me to this scam website, this just confirmed everything. I am sad and disappointed because I’ve been looking for a job for a long time and I’ve just been getting scammed its either through sms or emails. At this point, how do I trust all of these job seeking websites?
I also tried to look them up on LinkedIn and their website seemed legitimate like it their website under company > officers there is a David A. Cross, CPA
Chief Financial Officer, which made it even more confusing for it to be a scam.
