This is a complaint against an unscrupulous, criminally acting local contractor.
While seeking estimates for building a garage at one of my properties, a previously known to me person has expressed interest in performing the job. His name is Jason Becraft. He made a written proposal for building the garage, an offer that was similar to the ones I have received from other contractors. Like all of them, he required an advance payment for materials, equipment and a concrete foundation. In this case it was $6,000. Because I have used him in a much smaller prior job, I did trust him enough to pay him by personal check on May 9, 2024. He promised he would get a building permit and commence work as soon as possible. Over the ensuing weeks and months, he kept promising to get a permit and start working. He never did. While conducting my own investigation, I was able to determine that he did not have a construction insurance bond and in fact could not get a permit to perform work under the requirements of the Code Enforcement Department. After that, I started to ask for a refund of the money paid. He has provided a list of excuses, ranging from being too busy; to family accident and telling a third party he has paid the money to others. He circulated concrete contractor named NAME as the person who now has my money. Jason Becraft does not talk to me anymore, ignoring my pleas to do the legally and morally right thing.
After this, I have started asking the sheriff department, the Schuyler District Attorney and the State Troopers to get involved and pursue criminal charges against this individual. Mostly, I am being sent away, told it is a civil matter. But it is not. He will do it to others and apparently, he did it before. A number of other contractors have been convicted in this state for similar thefts. Typical charges include but are not limited to grand larceny in the third degree (a class D felony), grand larceny in the second degree (a class E felony), scheme to defraud in the first degree (a class E felony), scheme to defraud in the second degree.
I urge you to take this matter seriously to prevent further victimization.
