Type of a scam Employment
The next day 'Michael Robert' messaged me on Microsoft Teams, discussing the onboarding process and said that first I would be needing certain supplies for the remote job before training could begin. After this, I received an email from a Julián David Martinez Rojas ([email protected]) claiming to be the company accountant. They sent me a check for the office supplies, which I was to deposit in my bank account before proceeding with the onboarding process.
After doing so, 'Michael Robert' continued messaging me in Teams, now stating that he wanted me to secure the supplies through zelle or cashapp. It was at this point that I became convinced something was wrong. 'Michael Robert' followed this statement by saying I was to transfer the money from the check into bitcoin to make the purchases through these apps. Now convinced that this was a scam, I asked what bitcoin had to do with any of this, only for him to insist this was how the company and its vendors did business. When I said I no longer wanted the job, he repeatedly insisted that I return the check, despite the fact that I had already been in touch with my bank to cancel the deposit, ensuring that it never ended up in my account. 'Michael Robert' continued messaging after this, insisting that his 'company' could not cancel the check and that I needed to pay them back immediately. It was at this point that I blocked all further contact.
As an additional detail, I will note that while during my initial conversations with 'Michael Robert' his words appeared normal and professional, as hours passed his grammar became increasingly broken, while his responses grew more erratic and unprofessional in tone.
