The seller found me through a Reddit marketplace as I was looking for a RTX 4090 Graphics Card. He told me he was based in Orlando, FL. We discussed the details of the transaction and came to an agreement. I was then told to contact the Brother-in-Law, Jeremiah, of the original person I was speaking to to finalize PayPal details as the person who originally made contact with me said they unable to receive money on PayPal. I made contact with the BIL and was then sent an invoice on PayPal. I took extra precautionary measures to ensure the product was legit such as receiving multiple pictures of the item with a timestamp and an Amazon invoice to show authenticity of the item. After I had proof that the product was in fact real and in possession of the person attempting to sell it, we came to an agreement. When I reached out to Jeremiah, he initially wanted me to send the payment to his PayPal, [email protected]. I could have done this, but I instead told him to send ME the invoice as per Reddit Marketplace rules. I was already skeptical at this point, but I figured I have gathered enough information thus far in the event of a scam. So he sent the invoice and we proceeded. My shipping info is tied to my PayPal account so that is visible on the invoice. I accepted the invoice and he verified my shipping address with me. Jeremiah then told me he would try to ship it the following morning.

The following day, I reached out to Jeremiah to see if he was able to ship the item. He told me although he was busy with clients in Ohio, he was able to set a pickup time for the package and it was shipped. Jeremiah used USPS to ship it. I noticed two things immediately when I checked the tracking number on USPS' website. 1. The origin of the label was Ravenna, OH. I thought this was odd, but Jeremiah had told me he was in Ohio for work so I thought nothing of it, even though the origin of the seller was Orlando, FL. 2. The USPS tracking showed confirmation that "USPS picked up item." I was not sure exactly how USPS pickups worked, but I noticed the tracking information was not visible on PayPal. On PayPal, when a shipping label is created and printed, the tracking information is automatically uploaded to the transaction. So I decided to google how someone schedules a USPS pickup and found out that when you schedule a pickup, you do not create a label at the same time. Jeremiah essentially never uploaded any proof of shipment although the provided tracking number stated an estimated delivery date of 12/9/2024.

I then took it upon myself to call USPS about the dimensions of the shipment rather than ask Jeremiah for an email or something to show a receipt of him creating a shipping label. When I spoke with a USPS agent, he was able to confirm that the tracking number provided to me by Jeremiah had a destination that was DIFFERENT to my address that I had given to Jeremiah. However, the destination of the item was in the same zip code. When I told the USPS agent that the transaction took place on PayPal, we were able to deduce that this is an attempted PayPal scam. The agent told me to go to the USPIS website and file a mail fraud complaint and alert PayPal as well. To take extra measures I also called the USPIS and was told to file this issue under the BBB.
