I was sent an email by someone appearing as a recruiter looking for someone for a role that payed higher than the industry average. They claimed to be from a New Zealand engineering firm that was expanding to include work in the US, and that they had seen my information and thought I would be a good candidate; the email contained my name, and I am actively looking for a job so I assumed legitimacy. I was told in order to speak to someone actually in the company, I needed to join the Signal or Telegram application, and I was already using Signal so I didn't feel like it was much of an imposition. Plus any other communication app would have sent red flags for me. From there I was given a "virtual" interview, which consisted of questions someone hiring at a business was likely to ask, though there weren't very deep questions. From there I was informed, again after only a few questions, that I was a good candidate and they would like to hire me. I was sent a PDF hiring packet that I needed to sign and return to them digitally. I did so assuming I would get tax information along with a handbook later. Nothing came, but I was told that I would be receiving a check to make purchases for the software I would be using. This is very out of the norm, but I was not sure of how a company in New Zealand may or may not procure software/hardware. I was sent a fraudulent check that my bank ascertained at my request. The amount seemed off for just software, and if it was the actual cost, the business would have been better served purchasing licenses in bulk.
