Looking for an apartment to rent in Austin (TX), on July 21 I replied to a posting on the website austin.craigslist.org. The author of the posting (as I discovered too late) was a scammer, advertising a fake property in Austin. The scammer, using the name Jonathan Pearlstein through the email address [email protected], introduced himself as an intermediary on behalf of the landlord Rene Tobar. He sent me information about the apartment and a Residential Lease Agreement Form, that I signed adding a copy of my passport. In order to take the apartment from September he asked me to pay a deposit amount of 3250 dollars, that I paid through a bank transfer on August 2.​
I discovered too late that the real owner of the unit I was interested in was not Rene Tobar.
