The scammer reached out with an email indicating that they had received my resume on LinkedIn and asked me to apply for a job. The job was for Augmedix as a Virtual Health Coach. I couldn't find any derogatory or scams about Augmedix with a quick internet search. So, I applied and an interview was scheduled. The interview was conducted via chat on Microsoft Team. I was then emailed an offer of employment via an official looking letter with Augmedix logo and letterhead. I was given a start date and had to send in a copy of my driver's license, bank account information for direct deposit, and then complete a W-4 that had all the remaining personal information. The hiring manager was Judith Machado with the email [email protected]. The Human Resource Director used the name William Carrasco, Ph# (973) 553-2566. They wanted me to purchase several thousands of dollars worth of computer equipment before starting, which I told them I didn't have the funds. They then said they would overnight me a check deposit in my account to purchase the required equipment. They then sent me a $16,000.00 check via Federal Express, which was "returned to the sender for security reasons." This obviously raided a red flag. The scammer then emailed me a replacement check for $1,989.00 and instructed me to deposit the check in my account and purchase the required computer through their vendor. The check that I received looked dubious, so I checked the routing number through the bank of issue before depositing. The company was in California, but the bank was in Arkansas. I called the bank in Arkansas to verify the authenticity of the check. Upon checking with the bank of issue, the account name on the check wasn't Augmedix as printed on the front of the check. They indicated that the check was fraudulent. I sent a copy of the check to the bank of issue. Fortunately, I didn't deposit the check. I had to change my bank account and freeze all inquiries to my credit through the three (3) credit bureaus. I ceased all correspondence with the "Augmedix" scammers.
