Type of a scam Employment
A couple days later on 1/3, I was contacted via text and told I was selected to interview with a hiring manager, ***** *****. I was supposed to log on to Skype the next day (1/4). I started to become skeptical at this point as I was given a long Skype ID and was supposed to search for the manager via that id at any point between 9-5 PST. This seemed unusual and I tried to get them to give me an exact time (via text). This was also followed up with an email from [email protected] with the same information.
I was prepared for a video interview (as is the norm these days) but the interview was all via Skype messenger. The interviewer had a picture and the name of an actual HR recruiter at K2View (looked the person up on LinkedIn and picture/name, ***** ***** match). I had to answer more questions and the interviewer copy and pasted information from the the company’s website. I was told the transcripts from the conversation would be presented to the hiring board and to log back into Skype on 1/5 for the decision.
Since I was doubtful but playing along, I tried to connect with this HR person on LinkedIn. I asked the impersonator on Skype to accept the request and she said that she was currently locked out of the account. I asked for the name of who would be my direct supervisor and was told I would be given this information “later”. Of course on 1/5 I was told I was hired. This was without any video or phone contact. I also requested the detailed benefit package and the person kept pasting the generic benefits from the job description.
I requested a copy of the offer and terms in writing which I was provided after quite some time of waiting (while in Skype chat). There were grammatical and punctuation errors obvious from the first sentence so I was convinced it was a scam. They sent pdf forms for me to complete for a background check (requesting ssn, mother’s maiden name, etc) and a separate pdf requesting my bank account information for direct deposit. I have not provided them with this information as I told the individual I would review the documents and get back to them on 1/6.
I reached out to some individuals on LinkedIn from the company (K2View) that I thought would respond. One was recently hired so I asked him if this was the same interview process he experienced and he confirmed that it was unusual and was going to report to the company’s internal security team.
