I was approached on instagram by a scammer that was posed as my friend saying that they would give me three-hundred dollars to paint my instagram post. I thought this was a good deal so I continued to contact him. The poser sent me a number to contact, he told me that this was how I would get paid. This number was the boss so I thought this was credible. The boss sent me a check to deposit that was for 1,000. I texted them back saying that that amount was a mistake it was only supposed to be 300 hundred. They brushed over this comment—and rushed me to deposit the check. I deposited the check and 500 went straight to my checking account and they were asking me to send that 500 to a vendor so that the painter—my friend—could get started with the painting as soon as possible—further rushing me. The scammer repeatedly asked for screenshots of all the transactions. I only sent them ones that did not have any compromising and valuable information. Because I only sent information that was not valuable the scammer started to rush me and threaten me saying that he doesn’t like long responses. At this time I was genuinely trying to get all of the money back to him because I no longer wanted to be involved. Once I sent that text, saying my intentions of just sending everything back, he got mad. The scammer started threatening me even more and I was still trying to get rid of the money—sending it back. Nonetheless, I ended up blocking the number because I was getting spammed with text messages from them and the boss was continually threatening me. Other numbers and email started to text in efforts to make me scared—threatening my life. Telling me they were a hired assassin and was paid to kill me, telling me they had my address, and there was no where to hide. I have blocked all of those numbers and am working with the bank to withdraw that fraudulent check and freeze my checking account and create another one. I have also filed a police report since they have repeatedly threatened my life and continue harassing me.
