Type of a scam Debt Collections
- Friday, 03/03/23, 12:33pm, incoming call from “Unknown” number, male with possibly ‘asian’ accent left VM, stating he was calling from the “King County Process Servers Office”
- Call-back number 1-877-314-0121, somewhat garbled reference to court, complaint against me, reference Case Number “3001365-CR”, ask for ‘attorney’ Anthony Brown, to avoid ‘further complications’.
- I called number back same day, 1:21pm, woman answered ‘Good Afternoon, ple[censored]d’, call ended by me (10 seconds duration)
- Called back twice Saturday 03/04/23, recorded message does not identify company name or type of business.
- Internet search, including $1 trial subscription (Public Data Check Reverse Phone Number Lookup) yielded no results.
RED FLAGS –
- A legitimate business would probably not be calling from or providing a seemingly untraceable callback number.
- Caller tried to create “sense of urgency”
- Caller misidentified the name of the company he’s calling from (no such entity as “KCPSO”). Legitimate process servers can work with KCSO Civic Processing Unit to get help serving legal summons.
- Several subsequent attempts to call back Monday and Tuesday 03/6-7/23, “User Busy”, call ended, or busy signal.
-
- Internet search for “Attorney” Anthony Brown, no listings for Washington State Bar Association or previous states lived in (Montana, Nevada).
- If this was an attempt to collect debt, the call was in violation of Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
- Specifically, Section 807, False or Misleading Representations, subsection(s) 10, 11, 14 (possibly 3 as well, if not an actual attorney) AND Section 808 Unfair Practices, Subsection 5 (if any charges incurred by the outbound calls)
