A letter and (a very real looking) check was sent to me after I responded to - if I remember correctly - something on Facebook about earning money as a secret shopper. I was fairly certain after the first email from the company that it was a scam (because of poor English, bad grammar, and mostly because I was told I was hired without anything more than a questionnaire I completed - the questionnaire did not ask for personal information other than my name, email, and phone number.) At any rate, I was skeptical. I received in the mail a letter with instructions and a check. The instructions tell me to deposit the check ($3,450) and use $3k of it to purchase six $500 Walmart gift cards. Fine so far, except I know that the check could bounce if I did this. Here is where it becomes obvious that it is a scam. After I purchase the cards and "make observations", I am to scratch off the silver area on the back of the card and take photos of the front and back to send with my observations. Obviously, they can then use those cards, and when the check bounces, I would be out the $3k. My question is, what shall I do with this letter and check, as well as the emails I've gotten from the person with the company - which by the way was another tip off - the person has a gmail address. Oh, and the check appears to be from a legitimate business - SmartZip Analytics (which when I researched it, is a service for realtors). Several different names were used: on email - Jim Curry; on letter accompanying check - Mark Scott; on return address of envelope - Jeffrey Horn.
