My parents are senior citizens and were recent victims of a scam. A man came to my parents' door, claiming to be acquainted with my father, although he never gave his name and my father did not recognize his face. He stated that he wanted to talk to them about funeral insurance and pre-planning. He did not provide a business card, but stated he was from Lincoln Heritage (a legitimate company). My parents let him into the house. Per my father, he was "a slick talker" and soon convinced them to give him both of their Social Security numbers and a blank, non-voided check. Once they had given him these items, he left the house. He did not leave any literature, business cards, etc. except for an empty folder with Lincoln Heritage's logo on it. My parents then felt uncomfortable with what had just happened and called the police. I called Lincoln Heritage, who stated it was likely a scammer, as their agents always make appointments to meet with potential clients and would leave a business card. We are now having to take steps to mitigate potential identity theft, bank fraud, etc. as a result of this incident. Luckily they were not physically harmed. Senior citizens, do not let anyone you don't know and that you aren't expecting into your home, and do not give out any personal information!
