Our keep from our complex wasn't working and our maintenance guy had quit. So our landlord wasn't sure when they would hire a new one to fix it. She suggested if we need something urgently call a locksmith.
My wife called a locksmith that was advertised as being .25 miles from us at noon on a Monday. He quoted her $50 just to come out and when he got here he told her $200 to open and replace the lock. When he was done. He pulled out a bill that said $700 and urged her to pay with cash. She fought back on the price but he said he wasn't the person to talk too. She would need to call the office and talk to them. And he wasn't leaving until she payed. He became upset when she payed with a credit card.
When I got home she told me how much she charged him. And I went and looked at the lock, it was the wrong lock, and was protruding off of the front door such that you could see all the mechanisms from the outside.
And someone could easily saw it off. The lock was also not approved by usps and I found out later he was supposed to contact my landlord before he did that, and you have to have a usps person present when you change a lock.
We called the front office to complain about the service and they immediately blocked us after we need to talk to a manager about the issue. I drove by the "office" and noticed it was fake. They were using a hospital as their address. The website is broken. And I found multiple other companies using the same fake address, the same fake phone number, and the same fake website.
I checked the local record to see if such a business was registered with the state of Utah and there was no business found.
We called the credit card company and got our money back. As soon as we did this they started texting and calling saying they would give us a discount or but that if we did not pay they would send us to collections.
Every text and call is from a random number and in each case they do not give us the name of the company in it. They will say something like "I am from the administration office of the locksmith that performed your service".
Looked it up online and this is a very common scam. My local newspaper ran 2 stories about it in the last 5 years.
I did get my lock changed again professionally. But now I'm trying to figure out if I should try to ignore the texts and calls. Are respond back with "We want the name of the company, the name of the owner of the company, and the physical address so our lawyer can get in touch with you. We are not happy with the service that was provided. There was a lot of unacceptable work." I am hesitant to respond at all because this is their game and they know how to play it. But I know there is a lot of scammy collection services out there and I don't wi them calling us to.
