I received a text message regarding a virtual customer service job I applied for. The message stated "Good day, I am Mrs. Chantal Espinosa (phone number 910-933-5022). I am contacting you in response to your resume of an Administrative Assistant/Virtual Assistant advertised online. I will like to proceed with your interview with you if interested." I agreed to move forward that very same day (Monday, January 18, 2021) I was told to download Telegram app and add Mr. Tim Kelly the company hiring manager's telegram interview link.
My interview was scheduled the following day (Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021 at 9am). Before the start of the interview Tim sent me the company website (www.makrocare.com) and told me "I was required to take 5 minutes of my time to read about the company, then let him know when I was done to proceed with the interview. The interview was different and than I expected.
All communication and questions was done through texting through the Telegram app. After the interview was completed, Tim Kelly, said to me "Well, you have done well so far and you seem like a perfect fit for this position. I need you to hold online because I need to forward our conversation to the Head Dept to enable them to see if you are committed and good for this job. I need you to hold back online".
When Tim came back to me he said, "For your consideration stand, you have good news, the good news is you've just been confirmed qualified for this position. You are welcome to "Makro Care". You are now given a chance to show your Commitment, Charisma, Diligence and be a Productive employee.
I have our whole conversation on my phone and screenshots incase somehow he deleted the messages from his end. I have been speaking with Tim everyday, I was told I would undergo 1 week training and orientation. Tim told me to email my full name, a copy of my drivers license, my home address, phone number, to the company HR, Mrs. Kathryn B. Gundersen at [email protected] to enable superiors to enlist them into the Company's Register for proper documentation.
I provided all information and received an offer letter to sign and return. I received a text (through telegraph) from Tim and an email from HR saying to get started with my job I was told they would need to send me a check to purchase software to use for this job. I was sent a list of software and equipment needed.
On Jan. 21, 2021, I received a check that was sent overnight via FedEx, as soon as the check arrived I received a text message from Tim Kelly saying, "I need you to open your package now and verify the amount on the check and let me know the actual amount sent to you now. This is when he told me to proceed to deposit the check right away into my account so I could start my orientation. I was completely shocked by the dollar amount of $5,000.00. He stated "Once the funds are available I will refer you to the local vendor you are to purchase your working equipment from to enable you start your training and orientation immediately. You are required to email/text me a picture of the deposit slip for record purpose. I sent Tim the deposit slip.
The following day (January 22, 2021) Tim text me asking if funds were available and to take $4800.00 from my account and go to Bitcoin ATM to deposit and buy Bitcoin and make it payable to the vendor's (software vendor) bitcoin address info that Tim provided me with. He sent me the bitcoin wallet address QR code to scan at the Bitcoin machine. Tim asked me to let him know when I was at the ATM and he will walk me through the steps. This is something I've never done before. I asked him if this was a scam, he seemed surprised that I asked him that but assured me that this was no scam and this was legit for my now new job. I said to him I sure hope this is legit and I'm not comfortable doing this and I would not do this again.
Once this was all done, Tim told me they will send me a "new HP Spectre x360 or Apple Macbook Pro MJLQ2LL/A 15-inch laptop, whichever I prefer" it would have all software installed and other needed equipment would be shipped to me. He confirmed the Bitcoin deposit of $4800.00 was received and told me he will contact me the next morning (Sunday) about shipping. This conversation was on Jan 22, 2021. I didn't hear anything from him on Sunday but didn't get to concern because it was the weekend, but when I still didn't hear from Tim on Monday, I got concerned. Tuesday (today) I contacted Tim saying "I have been waiting to hear from him, and all he said was good morning, how was my night. Later in the afternoon I texted him back saying "I'm curious to know what's the status of this job" He has not responded. I've also contacted HR to find out what was taking place and the status of the shipment. Down below are some corresponding emails between me and the company.
Hi Kathryn,
Can someone please help me understand what is going on? After receiving the check that the company sent to me I was asked by Mr. Tim Kelley to deposit the check into my account and then withdraw the funds to have them deposited into Bitcoin.
Kind regards,

Good morning,
The latest update from the operators who will deliver and install the Shredder, I was informed that the funds were not enough to cover the amount for the Shredder which will cause a delay in them delivering and installing the Shredder... I need you to click on these links so you can see the amount of the Shredder, but we are getting a discount from them. https://www.addrex.com/formax_fd8730hs.html.i need you to view the link and notify me once done. So, we need to complete the payment so they can deliver and install everything by Tomorrow morning.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kathryn B. Gundersen

We have received your signed offer letter, Thank you, and Welcome to our team. Next, we will need to send you a check to cover up your training materials, and sending a check usually takes 2 to 3 business days to mail the check to your address, and your bank will also take 1 to 2 days for the check to clear into your account. This company came up with an idea of getting the funds to our workers within 24 hours to cut short the 7 days period and we recently came up with the idea of this Mobile Check Deposit. which usually takes the next day to clear into your account.
1- Card payment: We can add you as an authorized user to the company account. Then we give you the Account Number and Routing Number to the companies checking account to make a payment on your existing regular credit card. this will be processed overnight, and the funds will be made available for use the next day.
{if, for example, you have a credit card with a limit of 4000, and presently owe 3400. The Company would be able to make payment to your credit card to cover what you owe. and you will be able to withdraw it from back as well} Okay?
2- Mobile Check Deposit which usually takes the next day to clear into your account. I can get the check deposited in your account today and the funds will be available to purchase your materials the next day.
instead of sending you a check and waiting 3 days for it to deliver, I can have a check issued in your name then I have it scan and sent it to you by email. you will print out the copy sent to you. cut to check size then have it deposited to your account today using the mobile deposit app. Okay?
Note. we do not need any of your banking or personal information to process this payment.
This is just an option if you’re not comfortable with it we can have a check sent to your postal address. and this is just an option to save time and you will start working within 3 days.
what do you think?
Are you understanding my point and are you comfortable with this method of payment?
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kathryn B. Gundersen

Please STOP these scammers from scamming anyone else.
This is so disappointing and unfortunate to learn that this work from home job was a scam all along. I feel violated and not sure if I can trust anyone at this point. All my information has been sent to these scammers and not sure how to stop them from using my personal ID, address and phone number!
I've been forced off of my job due to covid. I have a family that is in need of benefits. I was truly looking forward to working this new job.
