I bought a marketing course titled "Kick-*** Copywriting Secrets of a Marketing Rebel" from copywriter John Carlton's website, www.marketingrebel.com. It came with a free trial of his monthly membership for his "Insider's Circle," which I didn't want, but all the copy said it won't automatically bill at the end of the trial, so I completed my purchase.
I received a confirmation email on November 26, 2023, that said "We will NEVER start automatically billing you for your MRIC membership at the end of your trial period. We will love it if you decide to continue your membership by paying the tiny monthly fee. But we won't play games like start charging you without your explicit OK. I hate that [censored]. I don't like it when companies do that to me. We won't do it to you."
I was shocked to get an email about 9 days ago stating that I was about to be billed for my monthly membership. There was a link to cancel, so I clicked the link and the page said this:
"If your membership in the Marketing Rebel Insider's Club is from a bonus included with the purchase of another product, like The Simple Writing System or Kick-*** Copywriting Secrets of a Marketing Rebel... you do not need to cancel your membership! It will automatically expire at the end of your trial period. Unless you specifically signed up for monthly, paid MRIC membership, you are gaining nothing by continuing down this page."
This made me think I got the billing email by mistake. It happens.
So I scoured the site for a cancellation email and found one. I sent an email to them 9 days ago stating that I am afraid my free trial is going to bill even though they say it won't since I got the notice. Nobody replied. Yesterday, I was billed for the $29.
I dug through old emails and found another email address of a support person I spoke with for a completely different website - ideapower.net, but she was part of John Carlton's team so I asked her if she can cancel me and refund me because it wasn't supposed to bill.
That's where I think the scam starts. She told me I agreed to the monthly billing when I signed up. I did not. I am a web developer and a marketer, I pay attention. The copy said the opposite - like I just quoted - that I would NOT be automatically billed. She insisted that I agreed to the membership still.
Another member of the team, allegedly the CEO, Stanley Dahl, emailed me to tell me that I agreed to the monthly fee and automatic billing when I signed up. I sent these people screen shots of their own copy in 3 places stating trial memberships never automatically bill. They refused to acknowledge any of this and continued to tell me that wasn't the case.
Now their copy specifically says trial memberships that come from purchasing the Kick-*** Secrets course never auto bill. That is what I purchased, and I was told I would not be auto billed in 3 different places during the process - the order process, the confirmation email, and on the cancellation page. They still kept telling me I agreed to pay and that I was told my trial membership would automatically bill and renew.
I have the emails, screen shots, everything. I thought it was just a mistake on their end, an oversight, but they refunded me when I told them I have to do a chargeback. And then got mad that I told them I was going to have to do a chargeback since nobody was responding to me. They did refund me after that, but not without telling me it was a "courtesy" and they didn't really have to refund me. They claimed they never got my other email and told me it was my fault for not canceling, but their cancelation form doesn't even show up on the cancelation page. I tried canceling 9 days ahead of time and got no response from anyone, so I tried canceling even though the cancelation page said I didn't have to cancel, and it was still their fault and I should not have been billed.
Now based on the CEO of the company telling me I agreed to the charges and he is also ignoring the content of the emails his company sent and all the screen shots of his copy stating I won't be billed, I can only think these guys are running a scam to get people to pay for a membership and hope they don't notice the charge.
