We hired Adolfo Martinez (Maxx) for a laundry room rebuild (checked references, etc. After showing up for 11 minutes on day 1, he worked for two days with little visible progress (in which the project got more expensive with addendums) and on the third day worked for an hour and then left for lunch saying his sister was in a hit and run. He asked for advances to payment, continued to ask for more money for addendums while telling us a sob story about his sister. Finally on Saturday (where the project was supposed to be finished the following Fri) texted me personally asking for money for his sisters life saving medication. This immediately sent up flags I should have seen. We denied this, letting him know it’s illegal for a hospital to withhold treatment. We attempted to set him straight Monday asking him to not ask for more money and if he finished the job by Fri we would let it go. He ignored this and only communicated about his sister being in bad shape and saying she was dying. We at this point had recalled all his references and learned he had no sister and this was an elaborate lie and scam he had used on other people. We terminated the partnership and had the police observe him pick up his tools. He offered to sign a promise to repay us in front of the police but immediately after driving away he blocked us on Venmo. We had given him 30 days to repay us which he has 17 left but is not answering mail or email communications (asking him for the method of repayment and attaching the agreement he asked for and signed) as he has blocked on Venmo. This person is a criminal scammer.
