Yelp sent my request to the garage door companies on its distribution list. I received a call from a guy at Master Pros Garage Doors who said he could come right over and give me an estimate. Upon arrival, I opened and closed the garage door for him. Without inspecting the rollers up close, he told me that the rollers needed to be replaced. I asked him what that would cost. He said that he charged $45 per roller to be replaced. I had 12 rollers, so that would cost me $540 for him to replace them. I told him that my wife and I were retired and on a fixed income, and that we could not afford to pay him that much money to do the job. I then told him that I needed to get additional cost estimates from other garage door companies.
At that point it became obvious that he did not want to leave without getting the job. So, he asked me how much I could pay. I showed him the coupon I had for a $129.99 tune-up special. He then said that he would match the coupon price, so I told him to go ahead and replace the rollers.
I spent a career working in the national franchise industry where franchisees took pride offering their customers a quality product and reliable service at a fair price. Therefore, this guy caught me completely off guard. The crucial mistake I made was not getting is work order in writing. I went back into the house while he did the work. The job took less than one hour. When it came time to pay him for the work, he told me that the job cost $540 plus $30 tax. I could not believe what he had just told me. I was expecting it to cost closer to $130. I was furious and reminded him that I told him that we could not pay that much and that he put us in a very bad place financially. He did not care, and he would not budge. He said that I authorized it, but that was not true. He knew from the beginning that I couldn’t afford $540 because I told him so. I then realized that I had no recourse since I did not get the work order in writing, and if I refused to pay, he would take me to court, and I would lose because there was no written agreement.
After discussing the situation with my wife, we decided to attempt to get him to reduce the price by $200 to $370. Before doing that, I called three competitors to find out what they charged to replace 12 garage door rollers. Their prices ranged from $130 to $233. So, I sent him a text hoping to split the difference and give us credit of $200. Then, he called and lost his temper with us on the phone, telling us he would lose money at that price. It was all about him, not about us, his customer.
Home Depot sells deluxe garage door rollers for around $2.00 each, meaning that his wholesale cost could not have been more than $1.00 per roller, probably less. How could he lose money at $370?
He credited back $100, but that’s all. His web site says, "Satisfaction Guaranteed." That is not a true statement. Therefore, he left us no choice but to alert other consumers about the way he conducts his business.
