website given McAfee in the box www.mcafee.com/adtivate. I typed in the Product Key and got an error message that there was a problem with my computer.
My phone immediately rang with a caller ID of 806-341-9862. I answered the phone and was told that they noticed I was having problems renewing my McAfee. They said they could remote in and fix my situation. I allowed him to do so. He did the net user command and it displayed about 20 different IP addresses. He told me that my network had been breached and he could clean it up and protect my network for 249.99 for 1 year, 399.00 for 3 years or lifetime 499 for a lifetime. I gave him my credit card number and he proceeded to do work. I could see him running software that said cleaning. Eventually the screen went totally black. He began asking me for ip addresses on my printer, my husband's computer and what kind of phone I had. I gave him the IP address for my printer, but I did not give them my husband's IP address. At the end he made it look like he was downloading my McAfee. After he said he was done he asked me to recheck the ip address on my pc to see if it had changed. I told him I couldn't do that and he said that was OK. He put a document on my desktop with his name and phone numbers to call if I had any problems. He sent me a document to sign stating that i had authorized Helpful Consultants to charge my credit card and that I was happy with the service. I did not sign it. He did. I received an email from him that was done on my email stating I had authorized the charge to my credit card and
I was happy with the service.
I started getting emails from McAfee stating that my protection had expired. I called McAfee and they said my service was never
renewed. When I explained what had happened, they said they had no association with anyone who would call the customer. They
advised me to dispute the charge with my credit card company which I did.
My PC had 6 years of tax returns, so this person now has my SSN, date of birth, address, name.
