The scammer had a job posting online for a data entry position. I applied and spoke to someone by the name of Johanna Hathaway. She told me to e-mail Ron Greenberg. When I did, he told me he'd interview me on a phone app called Hangouts. While speaking to him, he advised me to buy software in order to start the job, and stated that he would mail out a check. When I googled the software, I saw stories of it being a scam.
