These are *NOT* random calls. The scammers have a set of data already. It's comprehensive, but it may contain out of date info. They *KNOW* things about who they are targeting. I am normally a proponent of 'baiting' these types of telemarketing scam calls. Since the Government is incapable of fixing the problem, the only way to decrease their efficacy is to waste their time. I was ably to burn ~45 minutes of his time with arguments & supplying fake information.
The 'tale' is a 3rd prize win, because a 1st prize would seem a bit too unlikely. The prize was $20M, plus $5k/week, plus a Mercedes Benz, plus a $1M home, and they would pay the taxes.
I will continue to call the number periodically in order to waste their personnel resources (until my caller ID is blocked by their system). The more people that are also willing to engage in this type of counter-offensive, the less effective we can force the scammers & thieves to be. Thew are few, we are many. Victory can be ours is we act. Defeat is inevitable is we allow them to function unchallenged.
