I inquired about availability/waitlist information for a Russian Blue kitten from what I believed to be a reputable breeder at Sarah's Cattery through an online inquiry request. She returned my email quickly, stating that she had no current availability, but she knew "an amazing breeder," from which she got her "parent cats." She said his name was Joseph (Joseph Comunale) and he was in McAllen, Texas. I emailed "Joseph" and had ongoing discussions about purchasing a specific kitten for $550 plus $200 for delivery, stating that his wife was due to give birth to their 1st child in 2 weeks and he really needed to find the 3 kittens homes quickly (justification for the low price). He sent a contract and had me pay the fees via Zelle. The contract stated most of the above and included a carrier for transport, as well as food samples. I did not question any of this, as I had believed his contact came from a reputable breeder. I paid and he said he would the paperwork for transfer of ownership together and the kitten would fly out soon. At 6 am the next morning, I received a call from Mega Pet Ways, saying that my cat had been dropped off for transportation and was being evaluated, stating that they had sent an email to confirm my address and wanted me to verify that email. I also found an email from Joseph, stating that the carrier they dropped Kiria (the kitten) off in was not good enough for the temperature variation between the sender's state and mine, saying that the company would have me rent or borrow a different crate, and I should handle that when I speak with the company. I then get a call from Mega Pets Ways, asking if I had read the new email with information concerning the crate rental. It was riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, and did not look like it came from a legitimate company. He stated (as did the email) that the crate would be a $1500 deposit and I would get 95% of that back upon delivery of my kitten and termination of the crate's use. It had a Venmo for me to pay some random person. They began calling and texting, threatening that I would need to go to court for abandoning the cat. I reached out to Joseph, who would not call or respond to texts, only email me back saying that everything was legitimate, he's used the company many times, I would get my money back. He said he recently had a previous client go through the same thing and she got her money back for the rental - yet another red-flag, because why would you continue to drop pets off in the incorrect container and not take care of it yourself while present with the supposed animal? I googled the transport company, the seller, and Sarahs Cattery and found multiple instances of a similar story, one to the letter other than the name of the person Sarah referred the guy to. Mega Pet Ways seems in on the scam, as no reputable company would ask you to Zelle someone, with no contract stating the terms or anything. They do have a website which I emailed and got a response saying that it was legit and I needed to send a Zelle to the agent handling my case. I never paid the "fee," and now have not heard anything from Joseph, his wife (who he had me Zelle the adoption fee), and obviously, no kitten. My kid's heart is broken.
