I was planning a move from Ottawa to GTA. I contacted about 12 moving companies requisition quotes for the service. I did not sign any agreement or make a verbal agreement to any service. I did not pay a deposit. I didn't even have a set moving date because I was living in the GTA and didn't know when I would be in Ottawa to pack etc. This company called me the week the that I had given them for the quote, told me that they had hired the movers and arranged a truck to show up one a certain date to carry out the move. I explained that I had simply requested a quote and there was no contact between myself and the company between the quote and this call. They aggressively told me that I would have to pay $1,804.04 for the 'service I had cancelled'. I did not respond to the multiple emails they then emailed me threatening to send the debt collection agency after me as they knew my addresses. The debt collection agency 'Dixon Commercial Investigators' then contacted me via email demanding payment. I called this agency and requested an invoice for the service that they claimed I had ordered. They said that they don't have to show me proof of anything - which is not how a legitimate collection agency company would conduct themselves. I then had to research the legal proceedings of how to go about protecting myself. I sent an email called a debt dispute, which means they legally cannot pursue contact with me unless it is a letter in the mail stating that they are pursing court action. When we called the Men In Truck company from a different phone number and someone else other than me engaged in the conversation asking about how they confirm a moving service, they said that they require a deposit and a signed document from the customer -- neither of which I had produced. Additionally, after a deep dive on the internet in reviews and complaints of the two companies, we found that the moving company and the collections agency were affiliated. Suggesting that they work together to conduct similar scams.
