A young man came to my door saying he was going to secure the rate I was being charged for natural gas. Asked to see my most recent bill to do so, and as such immediately transferred my service over to Michigan Natural Gas without my consent to do so. I was mislead into believing that this was a service that was provided by consumers energy.

A representative from Michigan Natural Gas came to my door and flashed me a badge, saying he was not with DTE but that Michigan Natural Gas provides the gas through DTE and he needed to check that my rate was correct. He had me pull up my most recent bill, which I stupidly did, and he copied down my info including my account number. He used tactics to make it sounds legitimate, such as asking me when I moved in. When he realized it was relatively recently, he said “oh, that’s probably why you haven’t seen us here before. We come out all the time.” I was wary but he was very convincing, and he had me sign the form to indicate that he had reviewed everything with me. As I reviewed it, I realized it was a contract. After he left, I googled the company and found a number of complaints, so I chased the guy down while he and his partner were still in the community, and demanded that he give me the form back. He complied, and I had all the known copies of the contract in my possession. I also called DTE to ensure they would not switch or change my service. I do not believe they could have saved my information, but wanted to warn others and report this company for using misleading and fraudulent claims to trick consumers into accidentally signing up for a service they do not want.
