Microsoft Engineers Reports & Reviews (1)

- Belton, TX, USA

I recently received a new ASUS computer for my birthday. It was purchased from Fry's in Houston, Texas on January 14, 2017. During the week of Jan. 22 - Jan. 29, 2017 as I endeavored to set up and establish use, I was hacked. The agent who identified himself as a Microsoft engineer named Michael compelled me to purchase extra security software. One was for $149 and the other for $199. He informed me that they designed the computers and that my new computer had a security breach and virus due to insufficient protection. He said that they are located in North Carolina. The Microsoft Edge software used to get online was held hostage. A pop up appears and includes a number that you must call to resolve the issue. I have pictures of the notice. Once I called the number, a live operator appears and makes changes through the back door of the computer. My computer was held hostage for several days as a I refused to pay him and threatened to inform the BBB.

Similar incidences have occurred while using other versions and varied Microsoft issued software. Such as Excel. It was a startling and terrifying experience. It is my hope that this problem will be addressed officially, especially since hacking has presented a huge national problem even during the 2016 elections. Thanks!
