I got a random email saying I was being charged $500 for windows defender. To cancel I had to call a number in "Texas" which turned out to be India. They called me back and the number came up as from Tennessee. I have no idea how they got my information but I told them I was going to report them and they hung up.

I received an email that can be found following my description of what happened.

I didn't check our email until after midnight and was alarmed by this one knowing that I nor my husband had been on the computer recently. My immediate instinct was to immediately call the toll free number. I got a professional sounding recording to leave a message, but they never stated a company name. I left a message, thankfully realizing suddenly this had to be a scam. I only left a return number I could be reached at, no name or other personal info, and that I would be contacting my attorney. I'm really hoping they call me, but also hoping that my identity hasn't been breached. When searching their phone number online it was stated that it was a scam and stolen identity was a possibility.

I marked "no" on losing personally identifiable information and losing money because it's required to be answered. But honestly at this point I don't know for sure. I hope that I didn't make a mistake by calling the number. Here's what the email stated. I copied and pasted it. They also used the Microsoft logo throughout the email.

We purchased windows from Renewal by Andersen which is a midwest company in June of 2019 so they are a year old received an email from Windows Defender Team for a protection plan $299.00 which they say will be charged to my credit card I have been checking and it is not on there yet. Called Renewal by Andersen and they have no idea who these people are nothing to do with them. So I think they are trying to scam people just need to be checked out.

I called the number. No answer. A gentleman called back saying he was Peter Hudson. I did not subscribe to the windows defender and wanted to cancel. He told me to go to www.suprremocontrol.com to help me unsubscribe. This is a tool to allow them access to your PC.

Sends email that you will be charged 599.99 for 5 year subscription if you don't call and cancel by them connecting to your computer.

I received the email and I really did not understand that I called the phone number and I told him that I wanted nothing to do with that and to not charge me $150 that was on the message machine they called me back within 10 minutes and just wanted to tell me what it was and why I needed it and I told him I didn’t have a computer so I certainly didn’t need it and they finally hung up

Here is the email message I received. I am afraid to respond or call the number, because I've never heard of this organization.

Caller claimed i am a customer and planned to automatically charge me a recurring $299.99. I explained I did not want this, do not charge me, and remove me from their contacts list. They continued to insist (threaten) me they would be charging , and ultimately hung up.

I received a robo call on my landline from 206-260-8291 saying, "Subcriber you will be charged $299.99 and if you do not want this charged to press (1) one or call back at 1-209-260-8291. The call went to my answering machine so I called back and a man answered and still did not identify himself other than his first name (I do not recall his name). I asked who I was speaking with and he stated it was Windows Defender and my subscription had expired and I needed to pay $299.99. I told him I had never needed to pay for subscription for Windows Defender and he insisted everyone with a computer had it and has to pay for service. I told him I was not going to pay for this service and so he said he could cancel my service and gave me a cancellation number 159 789 224 and then asked me to get on my computer so he could help me cancel. I told him NO and hung up. THIS IS A SCAM!!!

An automated voice said that I needed to renew my Windows Defender subscription and if I did not then my account would be charged $299 in three hours. It gave me the option to talk to an operator to prevent the charge and/or get a refund. I selected to talk to the "executive" and as soon as someone said hello, the call was dropped.

Wrote this up the other day but now "company" is threatening to have me arrested if I don't let them back on my computer to complete task.

I stopped payment on credit card once I read here of similar experiences. Tactics used involved scaring me with idea of "foreigners" trying to break into my computer, stealing files. Scammer identified self as Lance Jefferson, gave me a "badge number". His phone is 862-686-7332, but call originated from St Louis suburb. but his phone probably a cell. They wanted to run my computer on remote to install software which now they'e saying I've stolen.

- Kansas City, MO, USA

Someone else had same experience. Tech said foreigners were trying to hack my computer and steal identity and that they could save me by doing a cleaning of some sort. Asked me to leave computer on while they worked. A logo of some man working did come up on screen but that might have been fake. I got suspicious and shut computer down, reset password. So far nothing lost. But he did give me a discount!

Continuing calls from 1-800-609-7139 and at least once from 1-855-979-1070 saying that they were from Microsoft Word Defender. They say that they received an alert from your computer stating that your system is being attacked by some type person or type of virus. They offer to check your computer and hope that you will download some type of program of theirs, so they can take over your computer. They have a program that is online, but we cannot remember the name. We have met and talked to other people who have received the same type of call, some of them are seniors who do not understand that it is a scam to get remote control of their computers. We have spoken to a woman who appears to be a foreigner and who seemed to be in charge, then there are men as well. They will not take no for an answer and try to keep you on the phone and put fear in you about your computer. Sometimes when they call it will ring twice and then they hang up hoping that you will call them back out of curiosity. We reported the number to the police.
