Type of a scam Home Improvement
He will take a small deposit, ask for more for permits (which he never pays for) has you sign a legitimate appearing contract and has a DBA as some other construction company which in reality is NOT affiliated with him. He will do a great job of having a big crew complete demo quickly and makes it appear there is a big crew and a lot of work being done. He will then use COVID excuses to get more money up front than his contract says, citing supply chain delays, hard to get workers, etc. Then unbeknownst to you and against your contract he brings in unlicensed subs to do some work but since he bounces their checks or doesn’t pay them (even though you have paid Chris) they don’t return to your home. So Chris brings in other unlicensed and usually non-English speaking subs he gets from home improvement parking lots or Craigslist to do a little more subpar and work not done to code. Then Chris doesn’t pay them either so your job slows and he will ask for more money to get more materials, better workers, etc but in reality he is stealing your money and leaving you with a home that needs to be torn up and redone to code.
He also bounces checks to suppliers for flooring, cabinetry, lighting, etc so you will end up paying twice for those items as well. He has 4 different DBAs now and has scammed over $1M from homeowners, subcontractors and suppliers in over 4 different counties in Southern California. He needs to be behind bars so no one else gets scammed.
When he can’t get subs,
