Sought moving company to move less than 1000 lbs from Oakville to Dartmouth NS on Monday. Received a quote and discussed that there was no minimum. Would be charged based on weight scales. Required to send an insurance deposit of 500 to hold spot. Understood that pickup would be Wed (before the Friday date I entered). They arrived promptly. Seemed cordial. Trip would take 2 to 3 days. Again reasonable.
On the Monday after call received an invoice which had different terms. This was the first sign of trouble. They included a minimum extra fees (even though they said no hidden fees) but also a discount if done in the same day. That would have been Monday when the deposit payment was made.
In Friday I received yet another invoice with request that 50% was to be paid same day and balance before offloading from truck.
Amount was based on 3000 lb minimum and discount was not applied. When inquired by me they responded that I misunderstood and there was a minimum. When asked about the discount they stated that I had not paid before noon on the day we agreed to the arrangements. In fact we had finished our call at 11:30 and money was wired by 2pm. There was no discussion of timeline both verbally and on paper.
I felt as my furniture has being held hostage and wanted the move to continue as planned. I wired an additional 750. Then the calls and emails went blank.
I expected delivery on Saturday and asked when the delivery would be made to make final payment. Discovered that nothing had left Ontario and that the furniture and boxes were being kept back. Finally, on Tuesday I received a response stating that nothing would move because the full amount was not paid. They did provide an option to get the merchandise back. I said I want my belongings and a refund.
I was told that they would deliver same day between 3 and 5. I had an appointment with a surgeon at the hospital who was running late. I arrived 15 minutes late. Instead of seeing a truck able to hold my goods I saw a van. I received an email from the moving company stating I was not there and needed to be there immediately.
The boxed goods and mattress were brought in. The two person crew were going back to Stoney creek to get the remaining table, 4 chairs and two reception chairs. They were stopped told they could not enter. Codes were changed and police called on them. I was told this the next day after they went back to try to recover my belongings. As the gate was opened they removed and delivered my goods. They mentioned that they were not paid and were told they would not be paid as there would be a refund on this order. No refund was given.
