I was looking for dryer vent cleaning services in Atlanta on Google. I found a company called Mister-Chimney that offered an $99 deep cleaning and booked an appointment online. When the two people arrive to check my dryer vent, they said that I needed to have a level 2 deep cleaning. That deep cleaning cost $800 plus taxes and fees. They completed the service in just 10 minutes and told me to run my dryer for a bit. When I started my next load of laundry, my dryer was still having problems, and I looked to see the dryer vent was still clogged. I went online to see how to contact them, and I found this post on reddit of people being scammed too. https://www.reddit.com/r/Chimneyrepair/s/O435QHZ2Hw

The people that came out for my dryer vent are exactly as described in these redditor comments. I also found a post with a similar experience on the ScamPulse.com scam tracker.

I wanted my chimney cleaned. I contacted Mr-Chimney and arranged an appointment for November 20th, 2024. The technician arrived, and even though they had advertised $89 chimney cleaning he told me that since I had not had my chimneys clean for more than 10 years and there were two chimneys that they would be around $500 apiece.

He proceeded to use a rotary drill with extensions to clean the chimney. It took about 35 minutes.

My total bill was $1100 which I thought was unreasonably high. I was also very concerned that the chimneys were not adequately cleaned. So, I arranged for a another chimney cleaner to inspect the chimney on Sunday, December 8. That technician inspected the chimneys then told me that there was significant creosote in the chimney to the first floor, and that there work cobwebs and creosote in the chimney to the basement fireplace. this technician advised me not to have any fires in the fireplaces until cleaning had been accomplished.

I am very concerned that my chimneys have not been adequately cleaned, that they pose a fire hazard, and that the $1100 for 35 minutes work is unreasonably high.

I want to dispute the credit card payment, and I would like a full refund since the technician did not perform the work.

If necessary I will also contact a third chimney company in order to gather more evidence to support my claim

I needed my 2 fireplaces cleaned, which I later found out was double the price other companies charged. I was then told I needed a new pilot light assembly which was another $1200.

After 3 weeks I called and they came out but didn’t fix the issues. They then ordered another part because the first was defective. 3 weeks later they came out again, and could not get the fireplace to work.

By this time I had enough, and asked for a refund for the part. The installer gave me a number to call, and the person said I would need to talk to the manager about a refund. He has not called and I don’t expect to hear from them.

Also uses 615-488-6367 and 1-866-823-7520 as their contact numbers. Stating they offer a $89 inspection/cleaning. They show up in an unmarked minivan, no ladder, then state you need all this other work and charge you for services they did not complete! I would gladly have paid a legitimate company. Now I’m concerned in the 30 minutes he was here it wasn’t even done correctly. No itemized receipt and I’m afraid to even use my fireplace! See the $650 “crack” repair!
Chimney sweep scam

They act like an actual chimney sweep company. But then when their guys come they don't do the work and pretend like they have done the job. In this case it was dryer vent clean up. The vent access is on the roof so there's no way I could monitor what they did. They guys came stayed for 20 mins, then left without telling anyone. I was $500+ on my credit card which they had asked to be paid before they even started the work. In the end, no work was done and they kept giving me the run around when I asked about it. They were also not able to provide any NJ HIC license when asked. I have reported this to my credit card company already.

We contacted Mr-Chimney to have a basic level chimney sweep done for the season. I scheduled the appointment online and received a text message for Mr-Chimney confirming the appointment with some pre-appointment guidelines. The "technician" arrived at our home in his minivan (not a work/company vehicle) and in normal street wear. He looked in our chimney for 30 seconds with his phone flashlight and said that we needed the $500 level 2 sweep rather than the $89 basic sweep that we had scheduled the appointment for. He said that a level 2 sweep usually involves cleaning and inspecting from the outside of the home and on the roof, but because of the weather and the slope of our roof, he was not going to do that. He came in with his large shopvac, swept the chimney for maybe 15 minutes, and then charged us the $498 (using his cell phone), even for a partial level 2 service. I later emailed Mr-Chimney to explain the partial service and to request a partial refund, but no response was sent. I also called Mr-Chimney to explain the situation; a different email address was given to make my complaint. Again, no response. I have sent Mr-Chimney 5 different emails and have received no responses at all. In a previous ScamPulse.com report about this same company, the person said that their card was charged as MN Chimney instead of MR Chimney -- our charge was also posted as MN Chimney Help instead of MR Chimney.

Services were received 10/31/24.

We had a chimney that needed to be cleaned, so I contacted Mr-Chimney by phone after searching for chimney sweeping companies on my cell phone. A technician from Mr-Chimney came out on 11/1/24 and supposedly repaired the cap of our chimney and then attempted to clean our chimney, but we were told he could not get it cleaned. We were charged $1365 for the service and I reluctantly paid him using my Discover card. After he left, I checked their website, and it said they were NCSG certified and that their service was Satisfaction Guaranteed. My husband called them back because we weren't satisfied and was told they could come back out and clean our chimney for another $1250. They said they would need to do a chemical cleaning and would need to order the chemical first. On 11/6/24 I checked my Discover account and noticed fraudulent activity appeared on the date of 11/1/24. This was in addition to the $1365 charge from the chimney company. Also noticed that the company name they used to bill my Discover account was MN Chimney - not MR Chimney.
On 11/6/2024 I noticed a fraud alert in the BBB.com website regarding an imposter chimney sweep company posing as Minnesota Chimney. The alert is pasted below.
Alert:
According to information provided by consumers, an unknown party is running ads online for chimney cleaning in Minnesota, identifying itself when pressed as "Minnesota Chimney." But these ads are *not* being placed by Minnesota Chimney. It appears this entity is using Minnesota Chimney's name and reputation to solicit business, communicate with consumers exclusively via text or instant message, then have a less reputable third party show up and perform poor quality work. (Some consumers report a truck with “Rapid Services” on it showing up with a Shop-Vac.) If you are currently in communication with a company you believe to be Minnesota Chimney via text, ScamPulse.com urges extreme caution. The 'real' Minnesota Chimney can be reached at 612-806-6970. If you have already paid money to the 'imposter' business, you may wish to dispute charges through your bank / credit card, and submit a report at bbb.org/scamtracker.
I have several phone numbers for the Mr. Chimney company. 800-257-3214; 866-823-7520; 612-682-7521; 844-592-1764; 313-924-3532; 651-395-4214. It seems they have phone reps working from their homes in various states that schedule the service in the US. Some states the reps are in: Atlanta, GA; Detroit, MI and Texas just to name a few. When I called Mr-Chimney today and asked for an address for the business, none of the numbers I called could provide me with a company address nor was there a business address on the receipt that was texted to me.
Today I called a different chimney sweeping company that is BBB.com certified and was told they could clean my chimney for just $189. This BBB.com certified company said they have never had a chimney that they could not clean without using chemicals. This is certainly a lot less than the $1250 that Mr-Chimney wants for coming back out. Mr-Chimney will not be getting another penny from me. I just hope no one else gets scammed by them.

I found a website online to clean my dryer vent. I used their website to get a quote. I was contacted and scheduled an appointment for service. A tech came by surveyed the job, we agreed upon a price, and I agreed to have the job done. I paid and the tech left. Soon after I noticed my dryer vent on the outside of the house was broken. I emailed the company notifying them of the broken vent. I called the next morning to make sure they received the email. On that called we discussed a tech coming back out to replace the broken dryer vent cover. We scheduled a time and date. On that day at that time no one showed so I called the company back. That called resulted in a confrontational conversation but someone was sent back to my home to fix the vent cover. I was not home when they came to fix the cover. Once I made it home I checked to verify their work and noticed they replaced my dryer vent cover with a used, ill-fitted, broken cover. I’m not sure who to report this company to but consumers need to know to beware.
