In summary, the scammer attempted to obtain personal information and $125 for supposed background check and deposit for same day move in. He went by the name of Mr Ellis and targeted my ex-wife after she made a post on Facebook dallas move in finder group. The expressed that she was in need of Mercy Housing and due to her health conditions and unemployment status she has been turned down numerous times while looking for a place to live. She pitched the idea to me and I thought it sounded all right because of the storyline. He claimed him and his wife were about to have a baby and that his mother-in-law was suffering from brain cancer. You further went on to note that they were in the process of transferring her from her home to a nursing facility that could care for her 24 hours. And he requested $25 for a background check and said the rest was due right after it passed. He went on to collect the background fee and about 15 minutes later, called her back and told her that her background passed with no issues. Knowing this would already be the case, she was ready to move forward with the process and asked me what I thought. I thought about it for a minute and decided to give him a call and ask some questions for my own understanding understanding. Even though it sounded good, and the fact that we have been struggling in a car for the last month, I wanted to find out the fine details about how he wanted to do business and also wanted to see the place. He became irate Within 3 minutes of speaking on the phone with me. Was asking too many questions and he was looking for a serious renter who was ready to move in today. Since I was on my way back from work and rush hour traffic I told him he would need to give me a couple hours so I can get myself situated and then look over my finances as well as do my homework on the property. And we both expressed to him that we were looking for a fair deal that would help us overcome our hardship, but at the moment we could not afford to be taken advantage of. He then became rude once again with her on the phone and I was on a zoom meeting at the time. So I told her I'm not dealing with him until after my meeting. She told him that I would be free after 8:30. At this point I didn't feel like it was going to be a big loss if I were to take the night and sleep on it; that way we would both feel better the next day and I could think of any other questions that might be important to ask. He then called me at 9:30, but I did not answer my phone. I thought this was very odd for him to be initiating another conversation with me after I clearly told him that we were interested but needed time to think and get finances together. When he saw that I did not answer my phone, he became rude and started sending me very strange text messages not only were they rude, but they were of a persistent and pressuring nature. He made me feel so uncomfortable with his texts that I quickly cut off communication and told him that I would be back in touch later. And I thanked him and stop communicating with him for the rest of the night. The next day, he started texting me weird messages that were really strong and a racial nature and at that point I was glad I did not go through with giving him any more money. He was clearly running a scam. So I told him as tactfully as possible that he needed to leave us alone and what he was doing is very illegal. I also have the exported text messages from the two days that I would like to upload to the Better Business Bureau so that nobody else has to become a victim of his scam.
