Type of a scam Online Purchase
Minutes after the upload I received a message request from "Bobby Velez". He seemed very interested and said he would pick the couch up tonight (Saturday, June 24th) and would like to pay through paypal.
Then, he asked for my paypal information, because he wanted to send the money right away (at 10:30am).
Unfortunately, I provided the paypal email and then I received a call from Facebook messenger. He wanted to confirm I received a notification about the transaction. However, the e-mail said that the transaction was pending because my account was not a business account, and in order for the transaction to be completed, he sender would have to send $1,300 instead to upgrade my account to a business account, and then I would have to refund him the extra $300.
While on the phone, I started noticing some red flags (even thought I should have suspected it before that). His voice had a very distinct African accent of a black person, but his profile picture was of a middle age Caucasian man, and once I asked his name, he turned off the phone.
Then, he proceeded calling me several times to confirm that I received the notification about the extra money and then requesting me to make a refund deposit to his email: [email protected].
As I was already suspicious, I told him I would make the refund once he picked up the couch. But that is when he started getting very persistent and angry, saying he borrowed money from his friend and that I was scamming him. Unfortunately, I still answered a few of his calls while I was trying to figure it out. Then, he started threatening to report me for fraud, because I have not sent the refund yet.
Next, I received an email entitled: FBI Warning. The email said I was reported for not making a refund and my account was frozen until I would solve that. That is when I paid attention to the sender email: [email protected].
After searching I realized that it was not an official paypal email. Then, I blocked and reported the Facebook profile and emails from the sender.
Red flags:
- The buyer wanted to pay before picking up the product.
- Profile did not match the voice.
- Asking for a refund before I actually received any money.
- Email was not from the paypal server.
- The buyer never asked for an address or set up a time for pick up.
Other than email, I did not send any other personal information.
