I called a service that I erroneously believed to be AAA. On the call, I stated I wasn't sure if i still had my AAA membership and made other statements about AAA. I said that I knew that I used to at least be a member but did not know if the membership had expired. The caller did nothing to disabuse me of the notion that I was calling AAA and gave the impression that he was a represenative of that company. Caller stated that I was entitled to 80% reimbursement after initial payment. The caller called a service to jumpstart my car and told me that the vendor would be there in "40 minutes, defintely not an hour." More than an hour passed. A vendor finally arrived around 80 minutes later, during this time, I called the service again. The vendor called multiple services in order to cover their tracks. I saw at least two vendors arrive and believe the vendor contacted at least 3. The caller on the phone never said they were contacting multiple services and simply said the vendor was still on the way. The first vendor to arrive gave me a jump start. Afterward, the vendor informed me via phone call that the service was not returning his calls and not paying him for the service. The vendor told me that he was supposed to get $125 from the service and asked what I was charged. I told him that I had paid about $300 ($327.71) The vendor was incredulous that I had been nearly triple charged and advised me to contact my back regarding the scam. I eventually realized that the caller had posed as AAA. Thankfully my bank was able to stop the charge from processing. I want to make sure no one else is taken advantage of. These are duplicitous people taking advantage of people in vulnerable states of mind (car trouble.)
