The nonprofit that I work for received an email from an individual we don't know, saying she wanted to donate $1,500 and asking about the process. Our staff responded with our mailing address for a check. The check came yesterday for $3,500. in an envelope with a return address in Fort Mill, SC. The check inside was from Country Line Electrical Dist. in New York. Thankfully, we spotted it as fishy and called the company who verified that the check is fraudulent, so we have shredded it.

Here's how the scam works: your nonprofit deposits the check and then the "donor" reaches back out to say they mistakenly sent the wrong amount and asks the org to refund the difference. The org later finds out that the check was fake, and the money was never deposited into their account in the first place. So, then the org has lost the difference that was sent back to the donor.
