Netgear Imposter Reports & Reviews (1)

Google search turned up fraudulent website. Without prompting, chat box appeared. Asked for name and phone number, said a technical specialist would call. Caller requested to download ultra viewer. Caller asked odd questions, who used the computer, whether lived alone, was interested about some of the apps. The screen was never blacked out. Showed some stopped services and indicated installation of device was failing due to my network. I was asking questions with a kind of attitude and that seemed to anger the caller. I am not sure whether he just figured I would be a difficult target or whether he got what he was looking for and suggested to disconnect the session. Ultra viewer was not available in the list of programs to uninstall which I now understand is a new tactic. Lessons learned: check the URL and website carefully, this was an ad at the top of a google search (another red flag), never allow remote access (Netgear confirmed they don’t work like this) but if you do the application can be disconnected by the client before any damage is done, disconnect from internet immediately when you become suspicious.
