Fake job offer scam. Completed I9 and direct deposit forms and was sent a fake check to buy equipment.

I was searching for remotes jobs to apply for online and came across the Nexus Builds company at random. I didn't do any research on the company upfront, which in hindsight was a mistake, but I decided to apply anyway for one of their remote roles on their company website, which had appeared to be legitimate job listings. After a bit of time, they sent an email inviting me to complete a video interview via HireVire with a link to the platform. I checked the links for anything malicious via VirusTotal's website, but it came up clean, so I proceeded with recording my interview. There were 10 questions I answered, each under 5 minutes, with all 10 being job related, so it at least felt legitimate. I didn't share any personal information, and primarily just spoke about job experiences and skills I had that were applicable to the role. It wasn't until they eventually sent me an email stating that they selected me for the role along with an offer letter that I started to get more suspicious. There wasn't any contact number or specific contact person that the email came from. Also, the person's name that was used in the attached offer letter asking for a signature was Christine M**** (Human Resources Manager) with once again no contact details, which led me to search for the person on LinkedIn. Not only could I not find them on LinkedIn, but the Nexis Builds company has no connection to any actual person on the page they have setup on LinkedIn. Furthermore, on their LinkedIn page, they claimed to be a Fortune 500 company, but I couldn't find any evidence of that. Finally, I ran all of these pieces of evidence through ChatGPT to see if it could find anything further, and it stated that it found posts on Reddit where several job seekers reported being contacted by “Nexis Builds” through HireVire. After submitting a video interview, they received nearly identical fake offer letters like the one I shared. Most were later asked for banking info or offered to receive equipment, often involving check fraud or ID theft setups. Here's the link to the full thread:

Thankfully, I didn't proceed any further after receiving the offer letter, but it's concerning how well-organized and legitimate the initial steps appeared to be without seeming more like an obvious a scam. These people definitely need to be investigated and stopped before they cause anyone any future damage.
