Dear Management,
An HR person for a pharmaceutic company (NLS Pharmaceutics Switzerland) approached me 12/26/2023 via email, saying they had reviewed my resume on Indeed.com and I was a perfect fit for a USA Customer Service Remote job they had available.
I went to the NLS Pharmaceutics website, and they are a real company, publicly traded on the Nasdaq. Their latest news article dated 12/1/2023 states that they are entering the USA market.
I went through a lengthy interview process via Skype, and was told I was hired, and I needed to set up the remote office in my house and they would be sending a check to cover the expense of buying the necessary equipment. The check arrived ($3988.00) and I deposited it in the bank on 12/28/2023. It didn’t clear until 1/3/2024 in the morning because of the New Years weekend.
I was told via Skype to go to BestBuy and Staples, she would guide me, via Skype on my cell, through the buying of equipment for the remote office. I visited Best Buy, Henrietta, NY, early afternoon 1/3/2024 and purchased a printer, external hard drive, crosscut shredder, and some ink. She had mentioned earlier I would need to use a MacBook for the office, and they would purchase the MacBook and UPS it to me. She told me to purchase 2 Apple Gift cards for $500 each, open them, take pictures of their validation codes and send them to her. I did this in the store. I figured this must be for her to purchase the MacBook. I was also directed to go Staples and pick up some things and while I was there, she said to purchase another 2 Apple Gift cards for $500 (same thing, send her the codes) and Staples would only sell me one. She then directed me to Walmart to buy two Apple Gift cards ($500 each) the person at Walmart asked me what they for and they said this is a scam and refused to sell them to me. She (HR person) said to return to BestBuy, they would do it so I bought 2 more Apple Gift cards for $500 and took pictures and sent them to her, then I could go home. Even after Walmart said this was a scam, I believed it to be a real job, after all, they were having me buy equipment and everything.
I arrived home and started fixing supper, she contacted me again and said they needed 2 more Apple Gift cards for $500 each for Apple virus software and accessories. I was required to go back to BestBuy and purchase them, pictures validation codes send to her. I did as I was told.
Thursday morning, 1/4/2024 I received notice from the bank that the check for $3988.00 was returned unpaid. I called the bank, and they said the check was fraudulent and I was a victim of fraud. I notified the HR person what the bank said, and she said impossible! Their Skype account went dead, haven’t heard from them since.
I spent the rest of the day in total depression then started searching for ways to act. I found the Ic3 website which is where internet fraud against elders can be reported to the FBI. I finished the report and sent it on 1/5/2024. I waited a couple of days, and nothing happened, so I started looking for other ways to act. I found the FTC website and created another report on 1/8/2024 and sent it. The FTC website also advised contacting the Apple Gift card company and notifying them of the fraud. I contacted Apple and they recorded the validation numbers from the 7 gift cards. 2 of the BestBuy gift cards hadn’t been redeemed yet, Apple said they would be able to send out payment for those two cards in a few weeks.
Apple said the other five Gift cards that were bought at BestBuy and Staples were redeemed and it was BestBuy’s or Staples problem as a responsible merchandizer of gift cards. There are five gift cards at $500, Apple said to bring these to the attention of BestBuy’s and Staples management. They should be responsible for these cards.
Two managers at BestBuy told me they escalated the issue to Corporate Fraud Prevention. I went out and spoke with the manager at Staples and he rolled his eyes and said he told me this could be the possibility of fraud and there was nothing he could do about it.
So far, I am out $3500 and that is a huge blow to someone trying to survive on Social Security.
Regards,
