I received a phone call that was identified as coming from my county's sheriff's office (Washington County, Arkansas). The man provided my name and asked if that was me, I said yes. He provided my home address and asked if I had received a jury summons for a federal trial. I said that was my address but I had not received a summons. He said since I had not shown up there was a warrant for my arrest and I needed to immediately come down to the sheriff's office and that I was required to stay on the phone with him. He then provided the address for the sheriff's office and repeated that I needed to immediately drive there and must stay on the phone with him until I arrived. He said the only other option was to send police officers to my house and arrest me. Once I was in the car, he then told me that since there was an outstanding warrant that when I arrived they would have to book me but that I would immediately be able to post bond and leave and I would be informed of a hearing date. He then said I would have to pay $2000 bond but it would be returned to me. He tells me I have to bring cash or prepaid cards which I tell him I don't have. So he says I need to go to a Walmart and purchase a prepaid Mastercard and put the $2000 on that and bring it with me to the sheriff's office. When I got to Walmart he instructed me to find the gift card section at the front end and specifically said it had to be the black card with the words ONE in blue, a prepaid Walmart Mastercard. He told me to buy 4 of them and put $500 on each. Then, when I got back in the car he told me they needed to make sure the cards were valid and to give him the last 8 digits of each card. He said it happens all the time that people get to their office and find out they didn't load the card correctly and they have to be detained in jail. I said this felt like a scam but he said to check the phone number that he was calling from. Which I googled it and it said it was the Washington County Sheriff's Office number. I still asked why he needed the numbers and he said, "ma'am, no one can use the card without the full number and security code, all I need is the last 8 digits". By this time he had me so rattled, even though it didn't make sense, I did it. Then he tells me he's just realized there was a mistake and they actually need $4000. I say that I don't have that money and will have to go to the bank. I drive to the Arvest and as I'm walking in he hangs up. Once I get into the Arvest, the person I spoke to tells me I've been scammed and sure enough, I immediately took the 4 prepaid cards and went to the site to activate them and it said they were already tied to another phone number.
