I warned my bank that this suspicious merchant told me they would be debiting the above amount - an amount I never agreed to pay - from my bank account. I never gave them any personal bank account information, nor did I ever call them nor arrange either via e-mail nor by hard copy snail mail to purchase any product whatsoever from them. My bank's customer service representative told me a claim could not be made until the amount was debited to my account, and that I should call them back if it was. I was lucky. No such debit was done. Last night, another Norton e-mail, this time headed "Norton Premium Security", was sent to my inbox containing an invoice, whose opening text follows: Invoice 13116 Details

In both instances, I never contacted Norton's offices to request any product of theirs, nor to negotiate/arrange any Norton security software subscription. I never gave Norton, nor the suspicious e-mail address above, any of my personal bank information. Twelve years ago I was contacted by a South Central Asian (Indian/Pakistani) group using short-contract portable phones in an offshore scam operation. When I contacted the offices of the Snohomish County, WA fraud division, the Marysville, WA (police department) fraud division, the WA State Attorney General's office and the CA State Attorney General's office, they told me this scam was being given the highest priority by their offices because it was the most popular scam of that time, and its prime target was seniors. I am 69, and was a likely target. The CA State Attorney General's representative explained to me that these scammers look for a fish who'll bite, and now that I'd reported it, the safest thing to do was to block any incoming number whose caller left a suspicious number on my voice mail and ignore any such scam phone calls. THIS CURRENT scam apparently is an e-mail equivalent of the former phone scam.
