Hassan Jarraya of NY/NJ Appliance Repair charged $99 to assess the issue we had with our oven. During the visit on November 1 2024 he asked inappropriate questions and made inappropriate comments, asking me if I was Italian and saying "why are you buying such expensive appliances?" He didn't directly examine the problem; instead he used a machine at the foot of the appliance that may or may not have had any value in diagnosing the problem. The problem would have been easy to see, but it would have required making the effort to move the range out from the wall, so we told him that the electronic connections at the back of the appliance were not making contact. He said he needed the part necessary to fix the problem and asked if we were willing to go ahead. Since we didn't know anyone else who could make the repair and we'd already incurred the $99 diagnostic visit charge that was to be applied to the final bill of $500, we needed the oven for Thanksgiving, and he said he would have the part in a week to ten days, we paid $300 using a credit card. No word from him past the 10 days promised as the outside date the part would be received. I called 17 days later. No answer. During his visit, the phone rang several times and he answered immediately. The next day, after my phone call had the same lack of results, my wife called from her phone, a number he was not familiar with. He answered immediately. He said he tried to get the part but wasn't yet able to say when it would arrive. (We've since learned that part is no longer available which he would have discovered if he had even made the effort to try to order it.) When I asked him why he hadn't notified us in the time he promised, he became nasty. We had a heated exchange. He said he would refund all but the initial $99 charge for the home visit. I subsequently sent him 3 email messages, to which I received no response. The telephone mailbox has a "full" message. The credit card company immediately subtracted the $201 that represented the difference between the $300 paid and the $99 charge for the diagnostic visit, so in the final analysis we didn't lose money, but that was not because of any response made by Mr. Jarraya. I'm filing this in hopes that future potential customers would understand what to expect from this business.
