On December 10, 2020, I answered a phone call (833-517-1134) from "Janet" who that told me my Internet protection software was out of date. She posed as representing the company (though unnamed) I had engaged for network protection in June. I had forgotten Omega's warning about "never calling me" and asking for the voice code validation. She seemed to know the amount I had paid Omega and time period. Since it was only a short period since my engagement for these services, Janet offered a full refund of $509. Though that was not the exact amount, it was close. The refund interested me. I allowed her remote access. I asked how I get the refund. Janet said my credit card would be refunded that would leave me without protection. Janet offered updated coverage for about the same cost as I had paid. I asked how this would be processed. She asked what retailers I visited, such as Walgreen's, Walmart, CVS, which I was to purchase an activation card for about the same amount I paid for my Symantic internet protection (Janet never mentioned Omega's name) and would receive 50% cash back. This process seemed circumspect and I ended the call with Janet.
An hour later and feeling violated, I remembered to contact Omega to tell them of the incident . "Oscar" at Omega with whom I had connected in August scared me that I had allowed Janet remote access and showed me many thousands of attempts to get inside my computer since my allowing Janet remote access. Oscar said I needed a firewall. (I later learned the my Internet provider, Xfinity, already provides internet security). Oscar said I could go to a store to buy firewall protection but it would cost $200 per year and require precious time of vulnerability for a technician to install. Oscar offered immediate protection with 3 Omega plans, the cheapest being 5 years at $999.99. I knew I had made a mistake with Janet and was gravely concerned about internet theft and all the attempts from hackers around the world already attempting access into my personal data. I gave in. Omega spent 2 hours in my computer and provided another invoice.
Now I will attempt to ask my bank to block the purchase, change my bank accounts, passwords and other financial information that I can (I won't be able to change my Social Security number and date of birth), but I now was doubly concerned of the remote access granted and if a successful reversed charge might instigate retaliation by using my personal data.
I am 73 years old.
