The founder of DeskHop, a service to find open "hot desks" for co-working, emailed me in November 2021 offering a free 12-month membership in exchange for being a beta tester of the app and service and giving my feedback. I think he had found my contact information through LinkedIn. I agreed and attempted to use the site and app, but both were glitchy and unusable. I tried finding hot desks through the site several times, but without any luck, despite the founder promising that there would be multiple venues available in my location. I am not sure how the company obtained my payment information - possibly this occurred when I downloaded the app through the app store, but this was 2 years ago and I've since changed my phone, so it's hard to be sure. Recently (November 2023), while checking my banking transactions, I noticed that DeskHop had automatically charged me $99 for an annual membership renewal. It must have done the same last year, and I never caught it. The website is defunct at this point, and the app cannot be downloaded - I tried. It is listed on the app store, but has no reviews and when you try to download it, all you get is a page that takes you to the defunct website. The website states that the app used to be hosted there, but has not renewed its hosting plan. This is really outrageous to keep charging people for something that no longer exists, not to mention that the app has never worked to my knowledge, and that I never signed up for a recurring membership in the first place.
